We want to take a moment to congratulate one of our own, Alisa Pierini, who graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz this last month with honors in Cultural Anthropology. Alisa also received several awards and commendations, including the Deans and Chancellors Awards, for her undergraduate research “Performing Irish: The Evolution of Irish Identity through Music”. She has so much to be proud of! Congratulations, Alisa, and to all who graduated this year!

Food For Thought

Goji berries are the most nutritionally dense fruit on earth. They contain more iron than spinach, and more calcium and zinc than many other foods. Their powerful antioxidant properties have made them known for longevity and strength. The compounds found in goji berries have been used to treat diabetes, high blood pressure, and fever. They provide anti-aging benefits and have been found to protect against Alzheimer’s and age-related eye disease, in addition to improving brain health. Studies have shown that goji berry juice has contributed to mental well-being, restful sleep, and athletic performance when taken repeatedly.

Goji berries can be eaten raw, cooked into foods, added to smoothies, or used in teas. The most common form is dried, but blending them into a smoothie can provide the nutrients in a more palatable manner. Goji berry supplements are also available but it is still unknown whether this form contains the same health benefits.

People taking warfarin, the blood thinner, or medication for diabetes or blood pressure should NOT eat any form of goji berries. Also, those with pollen allergies may want to avoid eating goji berries, although they are often safe in moderation. Consult a doctor before making dietary changes.

For a variety of raw food recipes using goji berries, visit:

Farmers' market fruit is selectively picked at its prime, usually within a few days (or hours!) of going to market. You can make a fairly safe assumption that if it's not already ripe, it will be within the next day or two. The Kitchn has posted a couple of articles on Farmers' Market Etiquette, including How to Choose Ripe Fruit and Helpful Hints and Etiquette Tips.

Success Stories

“This lunchbox is perfect for Indian cooking! Not only are there plenty of compartments available for a huge variety of curries and grains, but the spices NEVER stain the containers! This is extremely rare and something I haven't seen before in most Tupperware. I highly recommend this product to anyone who likes to have a variety of food for lunch and likes to have containers that look like new after months of use.”

“I have a lot of different bento boxes, but the Laptop Lunches bento box is STILL my favorite!!!”
