I can’t believe a new school year is already upon us! When I was in school (back in the dinosaur age as my tormenting boys like to remind me!), the Tuesday after Labor Day was always the first day of school. Now, because of the drive to increase the number of instructional days, the desire to push final exams to before winter break, and No Child Left Behind policies, 75% of kids start school before Labor Day. There is now a push, by school districts strapped with outrageous air conditioning bills (Tulsa, Oklahoma saved $500K by having a post Labor Day start) and tourism groups that have experienced deep losses (25% in many cases), to move the start of school back to the day after Labor Day.

Regardless of where we end up in the school start tug-of-war (I vote for going back to the dinosaur age…something about starting school in the full brilliance of summer always feels a little wrong to me!), I hope your start to a new school year will be filled with excitement and renewed energy toward creative and wholesome lunch making. Please be sure to check out our photo library or Pinterest for great ideas to keep you inspired throughout the year!

Wishing you an A+ year,

It's the start of a new school year, and many parents find themselves feeling a little uninspired when it comes to packing their kids' lunch. Well, we're here to help! Besides the lunch-packing tips we share on our website, we'll be sharing tips and ideas from some of our favorite bloggers all throughout September. Sign up for our blog to find the inspiration you and your kids will love!

As we mentioned in last month’s newsletter, Power Your Lunchbox is aiming to help kids (and adults!) eat healthier lunches, by asking people to take the lunchbox pledge. Through Sept. 15, they are taking pledges to pack healthier meals, and will donate $.75 per pledge to classroom projects. Commit now, and enter their contest for a chance at some awesome giveaways!

A few weeks ago, we were asked back to Google to teach the children of “Googlers” (the Google word for employees) about the importance of healthy eating and the keys to creating a well-balanced lunch. Initially, we plannned the class to involve lots of hands on activities for the kids. However, the day before, we found out there might not be any kids in the class at all! With no time to switch the lesson plan, we ended up teaching a class of adults how to think like a kid when packing their lunches! I don't think we need to say this, but it was tons of fun. Check out our story and see our pictures from that day!

Frances Largeman-Roth, mother of two, nutritionist and author of the cookbook Eating in Color, is hoping to revamp your weekly meal routine and improve your nutrition by widening your color palette... that is, your food color palate! We got together and made some of her recipes to get the full experience of her book. Check out our review of the book and purchase your own copy now!

"I ordered this for my first son when he started kindergarten four years ago. My second son just completed his first year of kindergarten (May 2014) and used this same kit! We've had to replace a few things that got lost or accidentally thrown away, but this kit has been super durable for two rambunctious boys! Would absolutely recommend it and would buy again."
